This is the second album from the a lady that is heavily influenced by classic new wave / new romantic music, with soaring old-school synths and a fun sense of melody and quirky songwriting. B! Machine again fills an excellent CD single full of moving songs and alternative versions. "Forget" is a fan favorite from the album "The Evening Bell", and here it finds new life. But instead of presenting a pile of "Forget" remixes, the single adds on several alternate version of other songs from the album, as well as an exclusive new song called "Curious". For melancholy synthpop, there is no equal to B! Machine.

Nice and emotional melodies and a brilliant vocals makes B! Machine to one of the most promising new acts for years.

Christian Death has remained the prominent band of the Goth/Deathrock scene since it's conception in 1979, largely through the relentless energy of lead singer and founding member Rozz Williams. The band is seen here, in it's original line-up, live from Los Angeles' Patriot Hall in 1993, 10 years after they broke up. The band plays aggressive female-vocal synthpop with particular attention to melody which is often where industrial crossover bands fall short. I think the band has greatly improved and matured in those years of absence and polished their sound. There's even a groovy song on here called "Tightrope" that has a chorus that reminds me of Annie Lennox, but with gritty electronics. I hope that this album marks a more permanent return of this solid act.

This new collection pulls together some of the songs from them previously released 4 albums and presents new remix versions. Albert Martinez from the popular synthpop band Neuropa takes a different turn on this fun side-project called Junk Circuit. Though there are plenty of catchy, bouncy pop moments on this album, the general mood of Junk Circuit takes on a more darkwave, semi-gothic appeal. Each song successfully injects elements of the gothic music created in the 80's, where catchy new wave hooks were still an important ingredient. Synths and guitars combine with Albert's voice and a female vocalist frequently takes the spotlight to keep the songs varied and memorable. The "Universal Republic" has a modern edge, there are songs that sound like they could have been major hits of the new wave era.

This band from Seattle has had some darker, more industrial albums released in the past. However, this album has turned to a more synthpop-oriented sound now (thought certainly still with a darker edge than a lot of stuff in the scene). The dark vocals and dark-tinted music combines with danceable beats and emotionally charged lyrics to make a sound similar to other dark synthpop bands like Diary of Dreams, or maybe Statemachine. It's hard to find a perfect comparison, but it's a nice solid album with a nice melodic touch.

This new act fits right into the popular "electroclash" mold, with retro-style synthesizer programing and sassy female vocals that talk more than sing. It's like a talky version of Freezepop with a touch of Miss Kitten. Fans of those bands will probably

This is a nice new album from a melodic, old-school US synthpop band with a touch new wave flavor.

Wacky, light-hearted electronic pop artist. The music fuses a lot of different approaches and styles. There are jungle beats, synthy programing, plus some rock elements (looped guitar
sounds), plus plenty of riotous vocals that rang from melodic to
rap-infused. There are a few 80's-flavored songs and disco-groove songs too. It's all over the place. Though fun and furious, you shouldn't expect a "typical" synthpop sound.

Raindancer's debut album "Audio" received much acclaim and instantly become an uptempo synthpop hit, with one danceable anthem after another. This limited 3-inch CD single features old-school extended versions of the songs "Come With Me" and "Regrets", plus a brand new track called "Sandman" to give a peak at the next Raindancer album scheduled for 2006.

Probably best known for their 1996 hit "Queen of Heaven," Razor Skyline has been one of San Francisco's best goth/industrial acts. The Bitter Well is primarily the work of programmer the_Gun and original vocalist Karen Kardell, and it finds them exploring some of the same material as their Journal of Trauma release, but with renewed passion and focus. Don't look to the Razor Skyline for techno-inspired dance fluff or dreamy, disaffected vocals - this is caustic, driving industrial with a serious score to settle. The two standout tracks are: "After the Flood" and "Rebellion Lost". "After the Flood" is surprisingly subdued, with melodic vocals and very danceable keyboards, highlighted by a vicious chorus. "Rebellion Lost" is a hit waiting to happen, pure and simple - with a great synth hook and what may be Karen's finest performance to date. If you ever feel nostalgic for their harder, angrier dance industrial of the 90s, or if you are tired of trite lyrics and whispered vocals, then The Bitter Well is for you.

This is an interesting new release which mixes a lot of different elements of synthpop, darkwave, and even ethnic music into a great blend that really works. I would loosely compare it to Dead Can Dance, a pioneer in the mixing of modern technology, medieval, and ethic music to create a new sound that could cross many different genres. Monica¥s voice is like honey, sounding like a great blend of Sarah McLachlan and Cowboy Junkies. Here you can hear a few of her songs from her two albums mixed into an electronic club sound. Monica agreed that it would be quite an adventure, so the vocals were given to DJ Ram in Russia and Nevarakka in Sweden, creating this trancey, high energy collection of songs that uniquely blend her voice with fun synth music.

Monica Schroeder is a wonderful singer from Canada with a voice that matches up with other Canadian greats like Sarah McLachlan or Margo Timmins (Cowboy Junkies). Her song "Poison" is a favorite from her previously released album "Orbit" and is presented here in it's newly remixed form for the dance clubs. The main dance mix is produced by DJ Ram, while other mixes are contributed by other popular Russian electronic musicians. This new club anthem is presented on a collectable 3-inch CD.

Monica Schroeder presents a sultry, soothing sound on "So Far", an album produced by Joey Belville (producer of The Echoing Green, Leiahdorus, Pristina, etc.). This debut release by newcomer Silent Auction shows a lot of promise. At first it reminds me of Glow with a quality female vocalist and a dreamy, yet uptempo traditional synthpop sound. But the next tracks introduce a male vocal lead, and the two begin combining their voices as the CD progresses. They have moments that remind me of the latest album by The Frozen Autumn, with a sort of modern version of Xymox. It's a strong introduction to the band, but a shame that it only goes on for six tracks.†

September of 2004, A Different Drum held a label festival in Salt Lake City, Utah. For two nights, synthpop addicts were entertained by the lively performances of 12 different bands. This double-disc collection features songs recorded live at the festival, and though the recording is low-fi and raw in the "bootleg" tradition, it captures the energy and lively attitude of the event. A 20-page booklet with photos from the festival is included. There are only 500 units available world-wide, so be sure to pick up this collector's item while you can. US synthpop. With the "Feel Free" single, Somegirl introduces the vocal talents of new front-lady Amanda. Somegirl's dreamy, atmospheric backdrop remains the same while the vocals take on a new edge and spirited, seductive lyrical approach. The singles features several remixes which push the tempo upward for the dance floor. Plus, there are a couple of exclusive tracks which present a bouncy synth sound, including a cover version of Kraftwerk's classic song "Sex Object".
