Musical comparisons aside, the Black Mountain full-length is one part protest song, one part pop-cultural commentary, and one part sick-grooverock casserole peppered with mesmerizing ballads and intoxicating ditties."Modern Music" is the lead-off hitter and counts its way to the imposing and riff-rife "Don't Run Our Hearts Around". Immediately thereafter, the sludge-rock masterpiece "Druganaut" establishes the fecund heart and tone of the record. And just when you think that things can't get any better, the songs "No Hits" and "Heart of Snow" are injected into your consciousness, clearly demonstrating that this band has no creative bounds. Black Mountain features former and present members of The Pink Mountaintops, Blood Meridian, Jerk With A Bomb, the Black Halos, Dream On Dreary, Sinoia Caves, and Orphan. Their debut full-length was recorded in the winter and spring of 2004 at the Argyle Hotel and The Hive by Colin Stewart and Black Mountain. This month sees the release of DRAIN'D BONER, the first new album for 3 years by Midland power trio BRAIN DONOR. Released on gatefold sleeve 12" picture disc and handsome wallet edition CD, the album showcases 5 tracks of abandond sludge trudge. Showing typical restraint, the maker describes the record as "NON-LINEAR CUNTEDNESS". While this is probably an overly harsh estimation of Drain'd Boners brutal mix of post punk style, No Wave and free proto-metal, the record's truly a-tonal sonic attack will certainly cause some devided opinions among fans of the band. But if your idea of time well spent is listening to music which evokes the sound of overly caffiened baby elephants slopping about in oily puddles, that have formed outside a former Soviet chemical factory, then this is the album for you. Brain Doner was formed in July 1999 and played their first show at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall in May 2000. Fronted by bass player/singer Julian Cope and guitarist Doggen, the most dramatic change in the sound comes, however, from new drummer Mr E, whose overtly confident and punctuating style of drumming echoes Sabbath's Bill Ward and Grand Funk's Don Brewer. This has lent a far greater emphisis to the rhythm section, in places even adding elements of brutal stop/start skank in the Jah Wobble period PIL tradition. Make no mistake, DRAIN'D BONER is not heavy metal, neither is it the fast unrestrained free garage rock we've come to expect from the band. Its new, its compelling and its the only current evidence that these morons still exist, since their previous album 'Love, Peace & Fuck' and the double LP 'Too Freud To Rock 'n' Roll To Jung To Die' are both long since deleted.

Finally available again - "Ghost of Yesterday" is a one-off collection of lesser known Billie Holliday songs as recorded by jazz visionary Bill Wells and Isobel Campbell (THE GENTLE WAVES, BELLE & SEBASTIAN). Bill Wells has been making music for years, largely ignored by the Scottish jazz clique, performing live and selling home made cassettes of his expansive music. In recent years musicians from further have embraced his music afield, working with the likes of the PASTELS, FUTURE PILOT AKA and V-TWIN, as well as releasing three albums through Domino (FRANZ FERDINAND, ARCTIC MONKEYS). Isobel Campbell is a founder member of BELLE & SEBASTIAN, but has stretched herself outside the confines of the group. She has released two albums as THE GENTLE WAVES and as a solo artist. Isobel's recent collaboration with Mark Lanegan has garnered fulsome praise; her profile has never been higher. Her collaborations with Wells began with some live shows in which he participated and culminated in. The crepuscular tones of "Ghost of Yesterday" will be a friend for life. Long live Billie Holiday!
